The environmental factors you and your family may be exposed to, I suggest you begin with baby steps to remove them.  Our world is filled with toxins and changing things out all at once is not financially possible for most.

The first steps I would suggest would be the cheapest:

EMF’s:
Power strips for televisions, sound systems, routers, and turning them off at night.  Cell phones not in the bedroom while sleeping (buying an inexpensive old-fashioned alarm clock can replace the use of the phone as an alarm).

Foods:
Use the Clean Fifteen and the Dirty Dozen lists, to begin bringing only nutrient dense foods into the home.  Also, the list of good and bad fats, to begin replacing those as well.

Storage of Foods
Using a salad bowl and a dessert plate, one can store left-overs in the refrigerator without using plastics.  Resale stores and discount stores like Marshalls, TJ MAXX, Ross, etc. often carry Pyrex and glass containers with lids on them, as you are able to add them to your cabinets, you can replace the bowls and plates.  Those plastic storage containers can still be used!  Crayons, markers, nuts and bolts, nails, the list is endless to continue to use them, we just do not want our foods in contact with the plastic!

As you get low on plastic wrap and tin foil, you might consider replacing those with re-usable bees wrap and parchment paper (non-bleached!).  These can be composted after they have run their life as well. BPA free silicone bags are another option to replace your plastic bags.

Kitchen cooking utensils, pots, and pans:
These begin to get expensive if replacing all of them.  I myself began with one stainless steel frying pan and one cast iron Dutch oven (the lid was also a frying pan!)  As time went on and I found sales, I picked up more pieces.  Cast Iron can often be found in re-sale stores, a good seasoning and you have a brand-new piece again!  Ceramic coated is also a good option.

Avoiding Neurotoxins in your meals

Using wood or bamboo utensils in cooking is highly recommended.  The plastics leach into your foods with the heat.  In the beginning, you might buy one spoon and one spatula, it means more washing, but you can add to your collection as you can financially!  I recently found a set of 6 bamboo utensils at my health-food store for $15, that made each utensil $2.50 a piece!

Household cleaners:
Like pots and pans, this is an expense that replacing them all at once may not be feasible.  As you run low, look to replace with cleaners made of high quality, sustainable, soapy cleaners instead of colored cleaners and bleach cleaners.
Also look for all-natural cotton cloths to clean with vs paper towels, E-cloths makes specific cloths for specific things to clean, again, these can be added in slowly!  Sponges should be made of all-natural materials, not dyed in bright blue or green or hot pink colors.
Our clothes, sheets etc. are touching our largest organ all day and all night long, the skin!  What you wash them in can greatly reduce being exposed to toxins.  Use plant powered. Biodegradable, chemical free detergents.  I use Ecos, and I also use Norwex.  You are looking for anything that is scented, to be scented from essential oils, vs from chemicals.

Dryer sheets:
Let me tell you a secret!  Dryer sheets keep rodents away and are often used in cars or RV’s that are being stored to do just that!  Now if the rodents know they are poison, why would you place anything on your largest organ knowing that?!  Dryer sheets also make clothing more flammable!  You can use woolen dryer balls to soften your clothes if you wish.  They are all natural and they do a fabulous job, three in a load is all you need, and the clothes seem to dry faster!  Our puppy just LOVES to help with laundry, as she knows those balls are in the dryer, and if quick enough, she can snatch one out and run away!!

Scenting your home:
Many like to use plug in air fresheners, these have been proven to cause many health issues, for not only you and your family, but your pets!  If you like to have scents in your home, you can do that with essential oils and either use a diffuser or put a few drops on a lightbulb, so it heats up when the light is on.  Good old-fashioned Potpourri works too!

Every one of these things can be gradually introduced as you can.  Each thing replaced is one less environmental factor straining your body.  Your body is a well-oiled machine, and as long as you are working to keep each of your foundations in good working order, your body is doing what it does best, detoxing all of the environmental factors it is exposed to!  Your foundations are digestion, mineral needs, essential fatty acids, sugar handling and do not forget hydration! All of these when working properly, will allow your body to detox the environmental factors you are exposed to.

In this month’s recipe spot here, I decided to change it up and give you two conversion charts!  Many of you have or will have received an Instant Pot for your gift at the holidays, this handy dandy chart lets you make your favorite recipes faster!  I am also including a chart to convert sugar to honey in your cooking and baking!  Sugar depletes minerals, as it needs minerals to be processed by your body.  Honey contains the right amount of minerals to process the sugar in it, leaving the minerals in your body, bones and teeth!
