July 1, 2023 – Are you using the artificial sweetener sucralose (Splenda)? Not only do studies show it disrupts the microbiome, causing a permeable gut lining (Leaky Gut), but studies also show that it damages DNA increasing the expression of genes that are associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, and cancer. [1]
In case you were thinking a permeable gut lining (Leaky Gut) was no big deal… I will tell you a bit about what that means. Undigested fats rancidify in the stomach and weaken the mucosal lining of the stomach. Once that mucosal lining is damaged or weakened, undigested fats and proteins pass through the damaged lining in inappropriately large sizes. This in turn, overruns the immune system.
These nourishing undigested fats and proteins are now assaulting the immune system. This is called Leaky Gut Syndrome, as the damaged gut lining allows fats and proteins that are not fully digested to leave the stomach through the damaged mucosal lining and into your body. The immune system views the undigested fats and proteins as one more assault that needs to be fought. This is where the birth of an autoimmune disease begins. This is also why people keep developing new autoimmune diseases, because they have not healed and sealed their gut lining.[2]
You don’t need to be a genetic expert to understand that if Splenda is turning ON genes you carry for inflammation, oxidative stress and cancer, that this cannot be good!
Chronic systemic Inflammation is a part of the development of many diseases and modern illnesses. This is not the localized inflammation you receive in an injury, but the form of inflammation within your body as a whole. When an inflammatory response changes from short term to long lived, it can cause a breakdown within the immune system, leading to major changes in tissues, organs and cellular physiology which then puts you at a much higher risk for disease and illness.
Oxidative Stress is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants within the body which can then lead to tissue and cell damage. While this does occur naturally in the aging process, it can be so off that severe damage is done, including systemic inflammation.
I believe we all not only know about cancer, but likely know somebody who has had it. Cancer rates are increasing in astounding numbers.
Side notes of those using Splenda to help with weight loss, Insulin Resistance and Diabetes, in some people this actually spikes blood sugars. “However, data from several epidemiological studies have found that consumption of NNSs, mainly in diet sodas, is associated with increased risk to develop obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes”.[3], [4]
There is ZERO nutritional value in sugars, your best bet is to simply remove them.

Asparagus wrapped in bacon with balsamic glaze
Serves 4
Ingredients
1½ pounds asparagus, trimmed to 4 – 5 inches
Olive oil
Salt & pepper
4 slices bacon, cut in half lengthwise
½ cup balsamic vinegar
1 Tablespoon honey
Directions
Preheat the oven to 425°F / 220°F. Line a sheet pan with parchment.
Place the trimmed asparagus on the prepared pan. Drizzle them with olive oil and generously season them with salt and pepper. Roll the asparagus back and forth on the pan to coat them evenly.
Separate the asparagus spears into groups of 5 or 6. Arrange the spears so that their tips are all facing the same direction. Wrap the center of each bundle with one strip of bacon.
(The bacon should overlap itself.)
Place the bundled asparagus on the sheet pan with the tail of the bacon on the bottom. (This will keep the bundle nice and tight while the asparagus is cooking and prevent the bacon from curling up while roasting.)
Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the bacon has browned and the asparagus is tender. Broil for the last few minutes of cooking until the asparagus bundles are crispy.
While the asparagus is cooking, prepare the glaze: in a small saucepan, combine the balsamic vinegar and honey. Cook the mixture over medium-high heat for 5 to 10 minutes, or until thickened. Allow the glaze to cool slightly (the reduction will thicken as it cools), then drizzle it over the cooked asparagus bundles and serve.
Side note, the olive oil makes it so the glaze rolls off of the asparagus (hence too much glaze in this photo!) So, know that it will puddle under the asparagus and apply accordingly!
Are you reading labels?! Paying attention to what your food is packaged in? Are you using Splenda and artificial sweeteners in your food and drinks? Many people have no clue how many chemicals they are putting into and onto their bodies on a daily basis. And even less people have any clue that those chemicals have been proven to affect their gut health, their liver function, their endocrine function, their risks for cancer, and even damage to their DNA!
